Low Fat Dairy and Weight Loss a Myth?

There’s been a lot of buzz around the assumption or correlation that consuming low fat dairy products helps people to lose weight.  A lot of people will put their low fat dairy consumption into overdrive when they are trying to drop weight because it is a common belief, just in the past five years or so, that eating a lot of say low fat yogurt, cheese and skim milk can help you lose weight.

Turns out, it probably is still just good old calorie restriction, and that may be the reason why the low fat dairy helps some to lose weight. A study was done on kids trying to lose weight, who consumed low fat dairy instead of higher fat dairy foods. The study unfortunately showed that kids did not really drop weight on the low fat dairy, even though they were reducing their dietary fat intake by doing so.

It may just be the same old reducing the calories thing. Maybe these kids ate low fat dairy, but still consumed the same amount of calories to make up for that lack of fat somewhere else in their diet, and that is why they didn’t lose the weight like they should have.

The children who were on the study consumed only low fat dairy products for a total of about six months.  After the six months were up, their weight and their BMI (Body Mass Index, a measure of the ratio of body fat and weight to height).

They found that the children had not lost any weight, and their BMI had not budged. The surmised that it was because the children were actually making up the calories they cut by eating low fat dairy somewhere else in their diet, so that is why they did not reap any of the benefits of consuming lower fat dairy.

This is a common complaint against low fat foods. While many people can eat a low fat food and be ok with it, most of our bodies tell us that we are missing that fat, and we make it up by eating more fat or calories somewhere else. It’s the same concept with artificial sweeteners, which is why many people believe artificial sweeteners can actually contribute to weight gain.

Our bodies ultimately crave fat and calories, and when we try to sneak it in here and there with low fat products that don’t satisfy, our bodies rebel and seek it out elsewhere.

You will be encouraged to eat a lot of food that is highly unhealthy and this will result in future problems. The way our bodies work is very fascinating, but the way that people try to change this through diets can and will cause problems for many of us. For example some of the foods such as fish do have a high level of Mercury in them. The reason for these high levels of Mercury is because of generations of pollution that has been taking place. But high levels of Mercury can cause someone to experience serious neurological disorders. While this will only be as a result of high levels of Mercury intake it seems that The South Beach Diet wants you to have a lot of fish intake, especially during the first two weeks and as you start to include it into your diet after these first two weeks you will still have a high intake of fish plus all the other minerals that come with fish such as Mercury.

There are many diets that do work and they work very well. However it seems that The South Beach Diet has helped many people to lose weight, but it seems that people are trying to forget about the old way of losing weight through general exercise of about 30 minutes a day and also eating a healthy well balanced diet. If you have been eating a lot of bread and are then told to quit for two weeks for you new diet, then you will experiences some withdrawal symptoms and you will find it hard to resist these cravings.

With all these new diets coming out a lot of people get confused as to which diet is right for them. They do seem to get lost somewhere and find it hard to find the right diet that will help them lose a lot of weight. If you do choose to go for a normal well balanced diet then you can be sure that there is nothing wrong with what you are eating. View From the Weekend

My main goal this weekend is to get organized. I have a very busy week ahead of me with two jewelry shows, a little catering, getting jewelry ready to go into an art gallery, freelance work, traveling to NC for a bead show, shipping out etsy orders, plus my normal work, housework, exercise, blogging and somewhere in there: eating. It's going to be crazy so instead of running around like a chicken with it's head cut off like I usually am when I've got a lot going on I'm being proactive.



 


 


 


 


 


 


 


 


 


 


This is my first weekend in awhile without travel, or something to do so I decided it would be spent at home instead of our usual outings. I'm in the process of getting the whole house cleaned. I made a batch of Krissie's Blueberry Sour Cream Muffins. I used yogurt instead because my sour cream smelled weird. I used wayy too many blueberries, I used three small containers thinking "I love blueberries! I need lots of them!" Wasn't the best idea I had. A Dieting Diet - It Is Not Only About Weight Loss


Dieting to lose weight doesn't have to be painful or uncomfortable. It can be fulfilling and satisfying and even tasty! And dieting really isn't only about weight loss. Some people diet to actually gain weight. Some people diet according to diabetes or other health requirements. These types of diets are not necessarily about weight loss. However, a dieting diet is about losing weight.

Look when we eat of the wrong foods and spend our time in a sedentary lifestyle our food settles into areas of our bodies where we don't want it to be. That food is then converted into the energy that it was meant to provide, but when we don't use that energy, it turns to fat.

When you decide to go on a dieting diet in order to take off those extra pounds, your whole mindset has to change in order for you to be successful. The 500 Calorie Diet - Diets For Quick Weight Loss


Engaging in diets for quick weight loss can be very dangerous. But, if you don't mind taking risks with your health, the 500 calorie diet might be right for you. Keep in mind, that even when considering diets for quick weight loss, the 500 calorie diet is a very extreme form of dieting. Even so, it tends to be extremely popular.

The reason for the popularity, obviously, is that you will lose weight quickly. Low-calorie diets abound among people who are looking for quick weight loss. But even among those low-calorie diets, 500 calories per day is at the low end of the spectrum.

First, for a definition...For a diet to be considered low calorie, the arbitrary cutoff point is 1200 calories per day. Anything below that is considered to be a low-calorie diet. Clearly the whole idea of a low-calorie diet is to lose weight quickly, but again - it can be quite dangerous so it should always be thoroughly planned with a nutritionist or your family doctor.

It's well known that the best way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat. You can do this by burning more, or by eating less. Your body needs a certain number of calories just to exist. If you're not eating enough, the theory is that your energy needs will be taken from the fat calories in your body.

The problem is, our body is very smart. It won't just keep burning the same number of calories and taking the excess from fat. Your body doesn't know that you are on a diet. It will think you're starving. To help keep you alive, it will cut way back on the number of calories that uses. To do this it will slow down your metabolic rate and will start eating away at your muscle mass - to get it's needed calories.

Over a long-term, this is disastrous. Your muscles burn far more calories than your fat, so if you lose them, it not only has a bad effect on your body but it also affects your ability to keep weight off in the future. The 500 calorie diet, as one of the diets for quick weight loss - works... but only for a short term.

The negative effects can vary depending on your body type, height, activity level, overall health and gender. 500 calories per day may be sufficient for some people for a short while.

For the vast majority of us, especially if we are carrying extra weight, eating only 500 calories per day is literally starving our bodies. Most likely, you've been taking in 2000 to 5000 (or more) calories per day and suddenly dropping to 500 will immediately move your body into starvation mode. So, your metabolism slows way down in order to conserve energy.

Our bodies are quite adaptable. In a very short time you will learn to survive on 500 calories per day. (At least until you run out of calories to burn...then you'll go into a coma and die.)

Thankfully, the majority of us discontinue our dieting before that happens. As soon as your diet is over, and you go back to your old eating habits - like we all do - you will have a sudden gain in weight. Actually, you'll gain more weight than you would have, had you not ever gone on a diet to begin with. Diets for quick weight loss just don't work. Plus, since you have lost so much muscle mass, it makes it much harder to maintain your weight in the future.

The most effective method of determining a healthy, livable daily calorie level, is by using a BMR/AMR calculator. It will tell you how many calories are necessary to support your health and your lifestyle. Once you know how many calories you need to maintain your weight, then you can subtract 500 calories per day, and you have one of the ideal diets for quick weight loss success.

Obviously, the mass and body size of women is dramatically different than that of men. That means, they need a different number of calories to survive. While the average man may eat 1500 to 1600 calories per day, the average woman may eat only 1200 to 1300 calories per day. You must consult your physician before starting any diet, safety has to come first.

So, to wrap it up... in the realm of diets for quick weight loss, the 500 calorie per day diet is very popular. It will work to help you lose weight, but it can be very dangerous - And your weight loss is only temporary at best. You should never cut back that dramatically on your calories without the constant monitoring and supervision of a doctor.

Eating Healthy for Weight Loss – I’m Finally Sticking To It

Now that I have started the intermediate level of Turbulence Training and combine Insanity on my off days, I knew I had to work on my diet next. I don't consider myself a terrible eater but I could really stand to clean up my act. The working out is really fun for me and it became a habit for me years ago. However, my eating habits were something I never really pushed myself too hard on. Now that the summer is approaching and it will be officially beach season soon, I figured I can take this opportunity to make healthy eating a habit just like exercise.

Years ago when I was a couch potato, and proud of it, something inside of me just clicked and I started to go to the gym on a regular basis. I work out at home now but the habit stayed with me. The same has happened with my desire to want to eat better. Something clicked inside of me. I guess you can call it finally being fed up, the same way I got fed up with living a sedentary lifestyle.

My diet plan isn't anything out of the ordinary and I'm not following any particular "diet." I am just making much better choices and I feel a difference already.

First of all, even though it may sound cliché, I had to get my mindset right. I had to do that to quit drinking soda. I read up on a lot of negatives about soda consumption, stopped keeping it in stock in the fridge, and kicked the habit. Now I'm doing the same thing when faced with the tempation of processed food. I still have a weakness for burgers and pizza so here is my solution:

Eat breakfast - I would eat breakfast off and on and now my typical breakfast is egg whites, vegetables, and 2 turkey or veggie sausage links.Light lunch - What I mean by light is no white bread, white dough, etc. Usually a salad consisting of a protein and dressed with lemon/olive oil.Snack - Typically Greek yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit or fruit by itself.Basic dinner - Protein, vegetables, sometimes potatoes.Dessert - I drink Shakeology as my daily multivitamin and as a very healthy dessert. It's like having a chocolate milkshake every day and I don't mind that at all.Saturday - I splurge on a burger, pizza, Thai food, etc., from a favorite restaurant.

This method of eating may be considered slow-carb, low-carb, clean eating, etc., and it probably is to some effect. I will have a follow-up post which will describe how I have been able to stick to this new healthy eating plan.

Hybrid Workouts – Getting Creative to Add Variety and Challenge

P90X and Insanity

One danger of falling out of a regular fitness routine is boredom. Exercise is often viewed as boring which is just another excuse that is used to get out of doing it. Although I'm at the point in my life where I enjoy exercise, even I need to add some variety to my workouts to keep things fun. I'm currently doing the beginner level of Craig Ballantyne's Turbulence Training workout. I'll be moving on to intermediate level at the end of the week.

I also began sampling the Insanity workout which I am now a huge fan of. I figured, why not combine the two into a hybrid workout?

The reason why I like these two programs together is because Turbulence Training involves resistance training, followed by an interval workout. Insanity is interval training using your own body weight. I have been doing them together. This is just my preference. Not everyone would agree to the combination and I even say that the two programs are great on their own. However, I like the variety and challenge the combo provides.

Another popular hybrid workout is the combining of P90X and Insanity. Again, the same principle applies. P90X is an excellent strength training program and Insanity provides an excellent cardio program. Both programs individually provide strength and cardio but combine the two for variety and challenge. A lot of P90X users do multiple rounds. If you like the intensity of P90X then combining it with Insanity would be a fun program.

Of course, the programs mentioned above are just examples. You can get creative and create hybrid workouts of your own. Do you find yourself doing the same routine on a regular basis? Or maybe you are in a workout slump and want some variety to get you back into fitness? There are a lot of workout programs available for free or on dvd. Find ones that sound appealing and put them together.

Slosh Pipe Training – Challenging Your Core

Who says fitness equipment has to be expensive? Well, if you're looking to add some challenge to your workouts, you may be interested in creating your own slosh pipe. Slosh pipe training is new to me and I learned about it after flipping through a fitness magazine. It is simply a piece of PVC pipe (6 to 10 feet long, 3 to 4 inches in diameter) and two end caps. You glue one end cap to the end of the pipe, fill the pipe halfway with water, and glue on the other end.

The video below demonstrates how easy it is to create your own:

Why carry around a pipe filled with water? It creates more of a challenge for exercises such as walking lunges, squats, or even just sitting and trying to keep it balanced over your head. The action of trying to keep it balanced activates more muscle fibers and gives your core muscles a good workout.

Insanity Workout – Taking it for a Test Drive

Earlier this month, I posted my Turbulence Training review and how I am following the program. Right now, I am still in the first four weeks of it and I'm enjoying it very much. The workouts are short, intense, and don't take up a lot of time during the week. However, I also borrowed my dad's copy of Insanity. If you're not familiar with it, it is a fitness program put out by Beachbody®, the company that also produces P90X.

Insanity is an advanced interval training workout. Unlike regular interval training in which you have short bursts of intense activity followed by a slightly longer period of rest, Insanity is opposite. You have longer periods of intense activity and shorter rest periods. This is an advanced workout and the fast-pace didn't really appeal to me. Yet, I want to try out a few of the workouts to experience it for myself.

This workout was created by Shaun T. He is also the creator of Hip Hop Abs (one of his earlier fitness programs.) Shaun T. is in amazing shape. His newest program is the Insanity Asylum Workout, which is more of an athletic workout but still very fast-paced. I've used Hip Hop Abs and he is a very enthusiastic instructor and fun to follow along with. I'm sure he is just as motivating with Insanity.

What is kind of awesome about this program is that no equipment is required. You use your body weight for resistance. It includes 10 discs that focus on cardio, plyometric drills, strength, resistance, and core training. The workouts include:

Turbulence Training has an inteval training portion for each workout. However, the interval portion lasts about 20 minutes. Insanity workouts are anywhere from 30 minutes and up. I'm not sure if they could work hand-in-hand. I'll probably know more after my first workout.

If I were to follow Insanity on its own, I would be using it as a 60-day program. It is an option for me after completing my current program. I do like cardio and it is definitely not a boring cardio routine to follow.

Below are the list of healthy carbohydrates for you to choose from and unhealthy carbohydrates you need to avoid:

Unhealthy Carbohydrates: Flour, sugar, sweetened dairy products, and especially CHIPS. Say no to Doritos if you want to diet healthily.

Healthy Carbohydrates: Rice, millet, corn, and especially OATMEAL. Oat meal is extremely good for a dieting diet.

5. Processed food makes you fat. TRUE. They contain tons of chemicals. The chemicals will keep your liver from processing fat (Fun fact: The liver is the organ that help dump fat out of your body) since the liver has to deal with the toxic chemicals. You wouldn't want to make the precious liver neglect getting rid of fat in your system and focus on harmful chemicals that you eat. Processed food is never a part of a healthy dieting diet.

6. Running help you lose fat. TRUE. Running is among the best fat-loss exercises of all time. When you run, fat is consumed as energy. As your body is also heated up, excess energy in the form of fat is transformed to thermal energy and dumped out of your body. Fat vanishes into thin air just like that. A daily 15-minute-jog would decrease the volume of fat in your body drastically. Time to hit the treadmill!

Anabolic Asparagus – The Importance of Vegetables in Muscle Development

I hate to be the one to have to tell you this.

But you should always listen to your mother.

What I'm trying to say is, make sure that you eat plenty of vegetables, especially if you want to get a better value out of your workouts. According to recent research published in the February 2011 issue of Cell Metabolism (you can find a summary in Science Daily at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110201122226.htm), the nitrates in vegetables -- especially green leafy vegetables like spinach, parsley and kale -- can make the mitochondria in body cells work more efficiently, causing people who consume more nitrate to take in less oxygen while they are exercising.

If you are interested in bodybuilding, you probably already know that mitochondria are organelles inside the body's cells. Their job is to convert molecules of food nutrients into energy that your body can use -- to work out, or do anything else. Some authors call the mitochondria "cellular power plants." Anything that helps your mitochondria to work more efficiently will likely improve your workouts.

Don't go thinking that you're going to get out of eating vegetables by finding a nice inorganic nitrate supplement, either. First of all, it wouldn't be easy to find one -- until recently, nitrates were thought to be toxic, and in fact, they may be toxic at high levels, so don't experiment. But equally importantly, the nitrates in green leafy vegetables work well precisely because they are not taken as a supplement. Nitrate in food is processed in part by bacteria in the mouth -- which would be bypassed entirely if you tried to get it by popping a pill. In fact, as an aside, scientists noted that powerful antibacterial mouthwashes, by killing bacteria in the mouth, might block vegetables from having a beneficial effect on mitochondria.

But if you don't like green leafy vegetables, scientists think that you might do as well with two or three red beets, or with certain fruits, as with a plate of spinach.

But guess what else is in green leafy vegetables, especially parsley, spinach, and asparagus? Glutamine -- an amino acid that is commonly taken as a supplement by weightlifters. Glutamine is an amino acid that is heavily used by the brain and muscles, is an anti-inflammatory, and also tends to reduce sugar cravings. Getting glutamine from vegetables is safer and less expensive than taking a nutritional supplement (safer because the toxicity level for glutamine in supplement form has not yet been definitely established). To maximize glutamine content in your vegetables, though, be sure to eat them raw, and as fresh as possible. In asparagus, in particular, glutamine levels fall the longer you wait after harvest to eat it. You will probably want to cook your asparagus, but try to cook it lightly -- just a little gentle steaming or grilling.

Glutamine is an amino acid, and amino acids, as you may know, are the building blocks of protein. So one would expect green leafy vegetables that are high in glutamine to be high in protein in general -- another nutrient that is often supplemented by bodybuilders -- and one would expect right. A cup of asparagus, for example, contains 5.3 grams of protein. (In case you're interested, it will also give you 29 percent of your vitamin A and 73 percent of your vitamin C for the day, as well as three grams of fiber.)

Parsley and spinach aren't quite as high in protein -- about a gram of protein per one cup of raw spinach, and almost two grams per cup of parsley. On the other hand, though, a cup of spinach or parsley isn't much. You can easily throw three cups of greens (let's say half spinach and half parsley, so getting towards five grams of protein) into a blender, add three frozen bananas (giving you another four grams of protein), two cups of almond milk (almonds being another favorite weightlifting food and adding two grams of protein), and toss in whatever powdered supplements or oils (or even a raw egg) that you like to have in your regimen. Mix it all together and, leaving out your powdered supplements, you'll have nine grams of good quality, bioavailable protein, and plenty of nitrates and glutamine, all in a delicious green smoothie -- the perfect pre-workout drink.

Need more protein or are trying to gain weight? Not a problem -- make the smoothie your beverage and have a meal with it. Fast, easy, nutritious -- I'm telling you, you need to make a video of the whole process, drink your beautiful green smoothie, and send the video to your mother.

No matter what supplements you are taking or how scientific your approach to bodybuilding may be, always remember that whole foods provide you with many of the same nutrients in a safe, bioavailable format that can help to carry your supplemental nutrients where they need to go -- straight to your body's cells where your mitochondria will know just what to do with them.

Turbulence Training Review – Short but Effective Workouts

Just yesterday I began my first four weeks of the Turbulence Training workout. You may not be familiar with the program. It was created by Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS, a strength and conditioning coach in Toronto. He is also a regular contributor to Men's Health magazine and a graduate of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with a Master's of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology.

Turbulence Training evolved from Craig's years in university. He discovered interval training and began to learn how effective it could be for fat loss. By his fourth year of university, he started training other athletes for sports performance and incorporated interval training into their workouts. Soon, his clients were amazed at the results they were achieving with shorter but intense workouts.

The long hours of lab work also began to eat into Craig's workout time. He had to workout in less time which is how he developed the first TT program:

I knew I had to get maximum results in minimum time and I combined everything I knew from bodybuilding to athlete training to interval training to research studies.

Jumping Rope to Lose Weight

I own a jump rope but I don't use it as much as I could. I used it about two weeks ago when I started my Turbulence Training program. Jumping rope is fun and it is a good workout. A recent New York Times article highlights jump rope fitness classes that are available around the city. Edward Jackowski is the owner of Exude Fitness and author of Jump Into Fitness. There are several advantages to jumping rope. One of my favorites is getting a good workout in less time.

Both exercises can have an impact on the knees. However, according to jump rope expert, Mr. Jackowski, jumping rope has one-fifth the impact on the knees and back as running and burns more calories in less time.

Another great thing about the jump rope is its versatility. You can use it for interval training. For example, jumping rope as fast as you can for 20 seconds and resting for 40, repeating for about 20 minutes. A good interval timer like the GymBoss is great for interval type workouts like that.

You could also use it in between sets of resistance training. For example, after your set of push-ups or dumbbell shoulder presses, etc., jump rope for 30 seconds before your next set.

Although we often say "jumping rope" there is really a technique to to it and is actually called "skipping rope." You have probably seen many boxers skipping rope in their workouts. It is not very difficult to learn once you understand the basics. Check out the short video below which highlights the basics to skipping rope:

Notice that the technique is to keep your elbows in and let your wrists do the work. Also notice that she is not jumping particularly high. Even when demonstrating the jog, her knees are not coming up high. I think this allows you to speed up or slow down easily. Once you master the basics, with a little practice, you can easily work yourself up to a full ten minutes of skipping rope. Add in HIIT (high intensity interval training) when you're capable and you'll get an intense and fun cardio workout.

The exercise portion of the program consists exclusively of weight training, done 6 days a week. Connelly himself says that the diet is 80% of the program in terms of weight loss. He also argues against aerobic exercise, claiming weight training produces the same dilating effect on arteries that aerobic exercise does.

Pros

Burn Fat: The emphasis on this program is on turning up your fat burning furnace. This is done through increasing lean body mass through weight training, and by eating small meals throughout the day which speeds up your metabolism

Cons

Too much protein: This is not a low carb diet, however it is a very high protein diet, advising dieters to eat 1-2 grams of protein per day for every pound of bodyweight they have. This could cause excessive stress on the kidneys.

Bottom Line

If your goal is to put on extra muscle and bulk up like a bodybuilder then this program might be right for you. For those with typical weight loss goals of fat loss and toning, this diet might prove to be too rigorous and cumbersome for your needs. Ultimately a successful weight loss program involves a balanced diet with an emphasis on portion control and regular exercise.

The Best Stability Ball Ab Exercises

I do not incorporate crunches into my workout. Ever since reading an article about crunches being bad and my review of The New Rules of Lifting for Abs, I believe that crunches can actually do more harm for the back so I use alternate ab exercises instead. I am now into the intermediate level of Turbulence Training, and so far, there are no long sets of crunch exercises in the program. One exception may be the ab curl-up if you consider it a crunch. I have a feeling Craig Ballantyne has the no-crunch philosophy as well.

Instead of crunches, I have done two ab exercises in the program that use the stability ball and they are awesome. I don't think my abs have ever felt so sore, even when I used to do crunches in the past. The two exercises are called:

He also includes the stability ball plank which I haven't tried yet. The beginner and intermediate levels of Turbulence Training have been using the regular plank positions on the floor. If you have a stability ball available, seriously try these ab routines. They look simple but they really do work the abs. Considering that crunches may not be the safest exercise for the back, these are nice alternatives.

Snooki Weight Loss – Why it’s Kind of Cool

For a long time I had no idea who Snooki was. I had heard of the popular MTV reality show Jersey Shore but had no interest in watching it. I watched an entire season of it which was enough to learn why the younger generation is probably so fascinated with this group of friends. If you are not familiar with the show, Snooki (Nicole Polizzi) is one of the more popular roommates and has recently been all over the news for her weight loss.

Jersey Shore has millions of viewers and Snooki herself has over 1 million followers on Twitter. I'm guessing that a huge portion of her followers are teenage girls. During her weight loss journey, she tweeted many posts on how she's going about getting fit. Here are some examples:

How to Gain Muscle Weight Simply, Quickly, and Effectively

There are a lot of guys looking to gain muscle weight who are convinced that they can't because of their metabolism. But this couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, 95% of people who claim they "can't" gain weight are just plain wrong! They are having difficulty with it not because of metabolism issues, but because of bad habits and a lack of a proper eating and training regimen.

Essentially, you want to have an idea for how many calories you're taking in now, and eat at least 500 calories more. Aim for at least 3,000 calories a day when you're trying to put on the pounds.

And don't forget - train hard!

No matter what workout program you do, the important thing is to put a lot of effort into it and train hard. That means training until fatigue. Keep going until you did the last repetition you could with proper form, and try to do one more. That tells your body "hey, I need to get stronger", and combined with a proper diet you will get stronger.

Don't forget to sleep.

Sleep is when your body heals. When you're trying to put on muscle mass, sleep is a very important part of the equation. Make sure to get enough sleep and when putting on weight - make sure you're full before bed. (When you're full, your body knows gains weight, when you're hungry - it burns fat. That's why you want to be full as much as possible while gaining weight.)

Health Diet - Dieting to Help Eliminate, Improve or Prevent Acne


Everybody [especially teenagers] hates this skin problem. some get really bad acne which can result in scarring while others just get a mild case. Either way we do need to look at our diet and change our thought process when it comes to eradicating these awful blemishes and pimples.

Though there is some debate as to whether changing to a acne free diet actually works, there is enough support out there for it to be realistic as there is enough evidence proving that what we eat may affect our skin [we are what we eat!].

Changes needed in our diet

Diet alone will not clear up any acne problems [but it helps], you will also need to get into the habit of cleaning and moisturizing you skin at least twice a day.

Avoid or limit the following:

peanut products
fried foods
dairy
salt
refined sugars
high carb foods
highly processed foods

Not all of the above mentioned foods will increase you acne, some people are more sensitive than others and therefore will have a breakout. * lean proteins - there is nothing more tasty than that piece of fat on the edge of a perfectly cooked steak, avoid this tasty morsel totally if you have a skin problem. Chicken skin is also a no no, this contains large amounts of fats and can also increase the oiliness that you are trying to clear up.

Some possible causes of acne [excluding foods]

* hormones - the hormonal increase that happens when we blossom from pre-teenage years into puberty

* birth control pills - starting or stopping the pill can have a hormonal reaction that could cause acne

* hormonal changes - in pregnancy, the poor body goes through some major changes in this period, and while some women bloom and look beautiful there are a few out there that have the opposite reaction to this very normal occurrence

* some medication - while trying to control or cure some other problem a reaction could occur giving you a bad case of those awful pimples

* greasy make-up - this can block the pores in your skin, remember to get non greasy make up when next purchasing these items

* hereditary - generally if one of your parents had a bad skin problem, you will have a bigger chance of getting a pimple problem as well
