American Diabetes Diet - Diet Guidelines


American Diabetes Diet is a diet set by the American Diabetes Association. This diet is controlled by guidelines to help you (if you are a diabetic) manage your weight and control your blood sugar level. However, do not set your diet on your own. Consult your physician before doing any diet or consuming any food.

Your diabetes diet will depend on many factors. This is why a doctor's recommendation is needed to create a diet plan. The following are the factors:

? Diabetes type (type 1 or type 2?)

? Current risks or condition such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol (or any other medications)

? Insulin intake (or if insulin is needed)

? Extent of diabetes (is medication needed in my diabetes type or will balanced diet and regular exercise do?)

? Lifestyle type (sedentary or active?)

Now that your doctor knows the right diet for you, we will move on to the standard contents of your diet. Your diet is generally divided into three parts. The parts are carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Carbohydrates should consist about 60 percent of the diet. Carbohydrates are very vital since this is where your body gets its sugar. Apart from these, you should consume anything fiber-rich but low in calories. Examples include fruits, vegetables, peas, lentils, whole grains, and beans.

Unsaturated fats are essential for any diabetics. You can get these from vegetable, peanut, canola, and olive oils. Omega 3 fatty acids are helpful as well. They aid in keeping the heart healthy and immune from diseases. Fishes like salmon are excellent sources of this fatty acid. Fats should make up approximately 30 percent of your diet.

The last part, which is protein, is needed because it provides our body with energy. You can get these from meat, fish, dried beans, eggs, lentils, nuts and peas. This should make up roughly 20 percent of your diet.

Alongside having the right diet is taking in your medications. Having healthy and balanced meals is useless if you don't drink your medicine or take your insulin shots. It is also important that you eat three moderate meals in a day and two snacks in between each meal. Adding a bedtime snack would not hurt too. This way, energy is distributed all throughout the day and eating consumption is lessened. Remember, do not eat only when you are terribly hungry. Always eat on time. Regular exercise is also a must to manage your weight.

American diabetes diet is needed so you can get through this crisis. Limit your sugar intake and be sure that you only take in what is required of you. I hope that you will always remember these guidelines so you may live happily. There is no prescribed official diet that holds true to every diabetic. Don't worry. Your doctor and nutritionist will assist you in eating the right food and amount, and changing your bad eating habits. Also, be on the prowl for ingredients. An ingredient might cause you to increase your blood sugar level.
